An elastrator is a pair of pliers with prongs that hold an elastic ring open. When the handles are squeezed the prongs spread the ring, and releasing the handles lets the ring slide off and into position. In livestock work it is used to apply rings for castration and tail docking in calves and lambs.
Prong form and size must match the rings in use, so ring size and the elastrator are specified together. Handle form and overall length vary, and the surface finish should be smooth. Rings are supplied separately. The tool should be used by trained persons in line with local animal welfare rules; we supply the instrument only. See also Burdizzo castration forceps.
